Huge congrats to Jamaal Bowman on his recent election! Congress, the nation, and most importantly our schools will benefit from his experience educating the “whole child”. Now more than ever, that concept is crucial. -Ahron Oddman, PSS.

Longtime Educator Jamaal Bowman Is Headed to Congress! Here’s His Take on Reopening Schools:

“My focus is on educating the whole child. Social and emotional intelligence is just as important as cognitive intelligence. The focus on community schools and really focusing on community development, as well as academic achievement, [is important] because when kids have resources in their communities, they’re more likely to grow holistically. And understanding the interconnections between housing, family dynamics, healthcare, employment, and what happens in education—my personal experience sort of informs all of that.”

The holistic approach to educating and putting equal value between SEL and academic learning will drive the success for students.  His social and emotional development I would say is what led him to his success and perspective to follow his mission....   SEL will lead students to the critical thinking that has been missing in education...   How do WE help?

I think it is SO cool that an educator was elected - this could be the start of ending the under-valuation of educators.  Great to see the term "formative assessment".

I love how he talked about the whole child. Also, on his point about special needs children, I have seen quite a lot of chatter on social platforms with questions and comments that their needs aren't even being considered in the return to school and how they can be accommodated. His experience as an elementary school teacher, a high school guidance counselor and dean of students, and a middle school principal will all add invaluable knowledge and perspective!
